The Effects of Smoking on Cardiovascular Health
We all keep hearing, again and again, that smoking is bad for you. That is a very easy thing to say for a non-smoker. But, if you happen to be a smoker who enjoys his hourly cigarette, you can hardly conceive that a peaceful activity such as smoking a cigarette on your patio chair can have such bad or harmful effects. These effects lead to smoking-induced diseases like coronary heart disease (also called coronary artery disease) and others. You may wonder if there is any truth to this saying that smoking cigarettes, smoking cigars or smoking pipe harms your arteries, jeopardizes your cardiovascular health and may cause heart attacks and death. Just what are the data and the evidence on WHY and HOW smoking is harmful to coronary health? In order to find out, we will first take a look at how CHD and heart attacks develop, then we will look at the physiological and biochemical effects of smoke and, finally, we will confirm the data with numbers from "Meta" epidemiological studies.
What is Diabetes, an Overview of the Basics
Caring for diabetes is a constant preoccupation for those who have been diagnosed with one form of the disease. However, the results they achieve can sometimes vary wildly. One morning, blood glucose measures at 115 mg/dL (6.4 mmol/L), and the next morning it is at 203 mg/dL (11.3 mmol/L) ! This can be very frustrating to both old-time or newly diagnosed diabetics. Some very famous professional athletes have achieved great success despite the fact that they are diabetics. They, of course, have mastered their condition. In order to do so, they have come to know the very nature of their ailment, They have a good knowledge of just what is diabetes. Having figured out how diabetes works (its physiology), they can now master it with great success. Actually, their performance is superior to that of the general population. A good knowledge of the basics of diabetes will go a long way in improving a diabetic's ability to manage the disease.
Diabetes and CHD are definitely not the same disease,
but there are a few important facts one should be aware of. Among others, heart disease is a common complication related to diabetes.
Low Density (bad) Cholesterol and Statin Drugs... (Lipitor, Crestor, Zocor etc)
This type of medication is now very widely prescribed, worldwide. Some people are, for all kinds of reasons, against taking any kind of drugs. In the case of statin drugs, they may be saying "no" to halting the building of plaque in their arteries. This article explains briefly what statin drugs do, how they do it and finally presents the benefits in terms of influence on cardiac event risk. In some instances, statins have been reported to reverse - or partially cure - heart disease.

Do You Need to Take Some Steps to Prevent Diabetes?
- Diabetes Risk Calculator - The American Diabetes Association
This tool evaluates your risk of having or developing diabetes in the future. The scale goes from Low Risk to Pre-Diabetes and finally Type-2 Diabetes. It uses factors such as gender, age, ethnicity, hypertension and family history. An arrow pointing on the right hand side of the scale does not necessarily mean that you are diabetic. Only your doctor can tell. It may however suggest that it would be wiser to be tested and that a healthy lifestyle may be indicated to prevent the development of type-2 diabetes.

This thorough 3-page presentation is an excellent overview of the coronary heart disease basics. It is more than a definition of CHD in that it undertakes to explain the common symptoms of CHD such as angina and also the other possible symptoms. It defines what constitutes a heart attack. The article explains what causes coronary heart diseases: the development of atherosclerosis. It also describes the other common forms of heart disease: Infection induced, congenital and cardiomyopathy. Finally it covers the risk factors for CHD, such as age, gender, genes, background, diabetes, weight activity level, blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking and even explains elevated homocysteine levels
You may have heard countless times that a reasonable level of exercise or physical activity was good for you. Just what is the evidence? In this Harvard study, 12,516 men were followed. The purpose was to examine the association or relationship between the quantity and intensity of physical activity with the risk for Coronary Heart Disease. It was found that the two were inversely related. Those people with a greater level of physical activity had the strongest reductions in CHD risk. The conclusions even extended or were valid for men with multiple risk factors. CAUTION: Speak with your doctor BEFORE embarking on an exercise program).
Physical Activity and Coronary Heart Disease (Reduction) - The Harvard Alumni Study - Source: AHA Journals, Circulation.
Physical Activity / Exercise and Diabetes (with note on the need for prior evaluation) -
Source: Diabetes Care ( A Scientific Journal published by The American Diabetes Association)
There are definitely enormous health benefits that diabetics can derive from exercise or physical activity. For type-2 diabetics and prediabetics, it is often reported as contributing in controlling glucose levels or glycemia (glycaemia, UK). This scientific paper provides evidence. It does however come with somewhat of a warning or caution note: it seems wise to make sure that the type and degree of physical activity is adjusted to one's own particular condition. hM: Speak with your doctor BEFORE embarking on an exercise program, to find out what is best for YOU.
The specialists at the Mayo Clinic have toiled to produce a most relevant page on heart-healthy eating. They have succeeded. This page is very patient-oriented. It summarizes everything that a person ought to know about heart-healthy eating. While it recognizes that changing eating habits may be somewhat unsettling, it points out better choices. It recommends limiting unhealthy fats and cholesterol. To that effect, it presents a table of fats to choose and fats to avoid. It recommends lean protein sources and again provides a list of foods to choose or avoid. The Mayo Clinic recommends whole grains as a source of carbs and supplies a list of baked foods to choose and avoid. Basic? Yes. But most relevant!
